How To Play Basketball Defense

Basketball Defense

Like any game of skill, that you participate in, it requires lots of practice as well as coming up with some strategies. This is certainly the case when in comes to playing defense in Basketball.

Every play develops their own style but there are some things you can do to perhaps enhance your movements. If you get in front of the player, making sure your feet are in front of him, it will give you an advantage. This is particularly useful when you are defending a dribbler for example. Try to get the opponent to go towards their weak side.

Make sure you move when the ball moves, and that you keep your reactions sharp. You must concentrate and remain focused the entire time you are playing. You must be able to make fast transitions when it comes to going from offence to defense. This means a rapid mode of change in thinking and responses. This is a priority in Basketball.

Think ahead, be in position to help when the ball is at the side. Be ready to assist if the ball holder gets beat. Remember that Basketball is a team play game. This means that you need to talk and listen to your team mates constantly.

Finally the game doesn’t end when your leave the court. You must not only practice shooting hoops, you must work at some precision skills. Work on your footwork, and stance. Keep your body agile with regular exercise.

Know your opponent. Watch them see what their strategies are and figure out their weaknesses. Keep your hands moving, don’t become idle, hit out at the ball as its in flight, you just may be able to change its course. Block the opponents view by raising your hand.

Always remember that Basketball is a game that requires both mental and physical input. The two must work in harmony if you are going to be a winning player. It’s important that you learn from your mistakes. Don’t brow beat yourself over them, but remember them and ask yourself what you could have done different. Always analyze your performance after a game.

Identify your weaknesses, everybody has some. Then determine ways that you can work on them to turn them into strengths. Be diligent yet patient with yourself. All of your hard work will pay off. Finally remember you are team player, not a one man show. The whole crux of Basketball is team work. You share equally in your wins and your losses.
