How to Play Forward Like LeBron James

The forward basketball player has a great deal of responsibility, in fact so much that the job has had to be split amongst two players.

They are called the small forward and the power forward. Both of these jobs require a specific set of skills, as well as have unique demands, yet they are supportive of each other. Physical size is of importance in these roles. For example, the power forward should be bigger in size than the small forward. This doesn’t mean less work for the small forward though because he has to have superior skills in handling the ball.

How to play Power Forward

As a power forward, there is much you have to remember as well as do. When the shots are made on the basket and it bounces off the rim then it’s your job to jump up and get that rebound. So you must be in position. You must be quick in your pace to arrive at the other end to provide the defense. It doesn’t matter what your size, you must use every bit of it to block your opponent.

Take up as much space as you can and welcome your opponent with wide open arms when he has the ball in your territory. Make sure you take up you position on the opposite side of the goal. You do this by running down the court from the center of your team.

You must be constantly on the move with your back to the basket. As soon as the opportunity arises that you are open between the defender and the basket then take it and be in position to receive the pass. Recognize when you are being well defended so you can get the ball out to one of your open teammates.

If you are within 6 feet of the basket and have an open shot, then seize the moment by taking your shot. On the other hand, shots longer than this should be left to the other players. Don’t be afraid to go after the rebounds. Reduce the abilities of the defenders by putting yourself between him and the goal when one of your players is set to take a shot.

How to play Small Forward

As a small forward, you are going to be every bit as busy as the Power forward. Constantly watch for player passes as you keep moving on the outer floor areas. Don’t miss an opportunity to take an open jump shot when the opposing team is tied up with your teammates.

Muster up all the speed you can to get to the opposite end of the court so you can catch a quick pass from the point guard. If the defenders are blocking you in front, by pass them or pass the basketball to a teammate that is in your line of direction. If you are free from the defenders then drive the ball inside. Bottom line is take advantage of every advantage you get. That’s what makes a good game of basketball.
