Every basketball team must have two guards. These are the ones responsible for running the offense. It is essential that the point guard be the team leader. His skills must be a peak to handle and pass the ball. The shooting guard has much responsibility as well. Its his job not only to be the high scorer but also be able to help the point guard.
The Point Guard has the job of bringing the basketball up to the end of the court. He must possess excellent dribbling skills in order to do his job. Usually the point guard is depended upon to get the most assists. He must keep a diligent eye upon the other team players to determine when one of this is open to receive the ball at the other end. It is imperative that the point guard is a dept at passing the ball with speed and precision. He has to be able to think quickly and be decisive in his decision. The other team players wait upon to the call out the signal of a play, and then follow through with the action he stipulated. There is no room for confusion. Basketball moves at a fast pace and all team players must recognize that and be ready to act spontaneously.
The Shooting Guard has no less responsibilities than that of the Point Guards. He must be constantly on the move. He has to utilize set picks. This way he can take an outside shot because he has kept himself free. One of the most critical roles a shooting guard plays is the defense position. He must identify quickly who the best perimeter shooter is from the opposing side. Once he does that then he will be must more able to prevent the opposing player from hitting outside shots. He must be innovative by finding a way to free himself when a play fails. He must be constantly tuned into receiving the ball and shooting it whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Every player on the basketball team has a role to fill. It is his responsibility to play the game to the very best of his ability at each and every game. No team can afford to have a player slack off. That’s not to say that there won’t be some games that a teammate cannot get together. Every player at any sport is bound to have a bad game or two, and basketball is no exception.
