If you are going to participate in the game of basketball, you must learn to play both offense and defense equally as good if you want to come out on the winning team. It’s not something you can learn, then not be concerned about anymore. Changes are taking place all the time in regards to the way the game is played. It is increasingly becoming more advanced.
A major example of a major change is the 3 point shot. Now it’s not unusual to see 3 or 4 offensive guards. Although there are many changes taking place in the game it must be remembered that the basics remain the same. It has gotten to the point where some teams encourage their players to master every position. A prime example of this is what in modern day basketball terminology is the flex offense. Way back when, it was called the shuffle. The main point here is that in today’s game the center is now finding himself in a guard position.
The point guard has a leadership position. He takes control of the offense and keeps an out on what’s happening in the backcourt. These sorts of responsibilities demand certain attributes. The point guards must be able to handle the ball well by passing, and be an either hand dribble. He must be quick on his feet and be able to make that outside shot when there is an opportunity to do so.
The shooting guard or the #2 guard as he is often called is usually the superior shooter. He has to be able to play good defense as well as read the opponents moves. He must be able to step into the shoes of the point guard if there is a requirement.
Ideally, the tallest player is the center and holds a very important position. He needs to be quick and somewhat arrogant. He really needs to master a short hook and jump shot.
The small forward is by no means an insignificant player. He must be fast and be a good passer. He must be able to score and possess the ability to shoot from anywhere.
The dirty work is carried out by the power forward. He assists in the control of the area within the key. He must possess many of the characteristics that the point guard has.
All players in basketball are equally important to the game. The sixth man is included in this but perhaps should be recognized just a little more for not letting his ego get in the way. He is prepared to sit in the sidelines forever ready when and if the need arises, and his talents are required.

Good post, I like your writing style! I’ve added http://jbomb.com/ to my feed reader, and will be reading your posts from now on. Just a quick question – did you design your header image yourself, or have it done professionally? If you had it done by a professional, who was it?

Very true when you say that you have to be able to play offense as well as defense. I have seen many players just stay on one side of the court near the basket just so they can be ready for the shot while they leave their man on the other side of the court wide open. This does not work because the other team will get more penetration and consequently you will have a high chance of losing. Great blog overall. =)
