Basketball Coaching

If you were a basketball player and you thought the game was tough then, well now you are in for a real treat.

As a teaching instructor of the game, you now have the responsibility of managing several ballers instead of just yourself. You must insure the compatibility of the players as a whole and get them to understand the fundamentals of team playing. It is sometimes difficult to get a player who considers himself a loner off the court, to become part of the team. With careful observation, patience and instruction you will accomplish this. If you are not able to, then that player will be of no real value to you, no matter how skilled he is. Afterall, basketball is a team game.

One of the basics you want to perfect is good plays. The team must understand the different between good plays and offensive motion. You know how important this is but if you are going to get your team to give you all they’ve got then you must convince them why good plays are critical to the success of the game.

Quick synchronized decisions lead to good shots. A good play must produce opportunities within a very quick time span that will allow specific shots. Inform your team that by being in the optimum positions raises the opportunity to take advantage of fast breaks.

Once your guys are convinced about the importance of this concept you will have them all thinking in one accord. This means they will co operate with each other and will be able to apply what you instruct them much more effectively.

Patience will be a virtue at this point. Learning how to perform good basketball does not happen overnight. They must learn to function as a group and carry out the game with precision. Then you must ensure that they don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill, so to speak.

A simple play should remain as just that. If it becomes complex it won’t have the same successful effect. You must insure that progress is being made in the teams ability to observe the situation correctly then make the decision and follow it through with no hesitation.

Don’t become impatient and move onto other plays until they get the one down solid. If you do this will only lead to inexperience and confusion. Before you know it, they will end up intermingling all of your instructions and you will have to start over again. It must be understood that basketball does not just hinge on having possession of the ball.
